HISTORY OF NYE BEACH; Since the late 1800's Nye Beach has been a popular destination for people seeking pleasure and rejuvenation. Named after John Nye, who claimed a 160-acre parcel in 1866, the land was sold in the 1880's to Sam Irvin who promoted Nye Beach as "The Promised Land."
In the 1890's the "summer people" as tourist were called then, began coming in large numbers. They came by train to Yaquina City on Yaquina Bay where the railroad ended, then by ferry boat to Newport's Bayfront, and finally by the boardwalk built by the city in 1891 to connect the bayfront with Nye Beach. From 1910 to 1912 the area experienced a growth spurt. The Nicolai Hotel, the New Cliff House (now the Sylvia Beach Hotel) and the popular Natatorium, which featured a theater, dance hall, and swimming pool, were all built in 1912. In 1913 the building now housing the Yaquina Art Association was built which was formerly a bath house for visitors.
